What is THCA?
THCA is THC before the heat. The plant makes it, a flame or a vape finishes it. Here’s how that works, and why a jar of THCA crystals is pure potential.
Not THC yet
THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the form THC takes in the living plant. Unheated, it doesn’t get you high.
Heat flips the switch
Dab it, vape it or smoke it and THCA becomes THC in seconds. Then it’s the real thing.
Pure potential
A 99% THCA crystal is about as concentrated as cannabis gets. A tiny amount goes a long way.
From THCA to THC
The living plant holds hardly any THC. It holds THCA. Heat knocks a small piece off the molecule, the acid group, and what’s left is THC. Chemists call it decarboxylation; everyone else calls it lighting up.
The conversion starts around 90 °C and takes hours there. Above 160 °C it takes about ten minutes, and at 200 °C only seconds. A dab, a vape or a flame is far hotter than that, so it happens the moment you use it.
With heat
At 200 °C the conversion takes only seconds.
THCA next to THC and CBD
THC
What THCA becomes when heated. The high.
CBD
No high, and it doesn’t turn into THC when you heat it.
THCA
No high as long as it stays cold. Heated, it behaves exactly like THC. Treat a high THCA percentage as a high THC product.
THCA on our product pages
You’ll see THCA in the product name, under cannabinoids in the product details and in the cannabinoid content, where it gets its own percentage. THCA and THC are listed separately. A percentage is the share of the product’s weight; because the acid group leaves when heated, 1 gram of THCA yields a little less than 1 gram of THC.
Use the cannabinoid filter in the shop to see every product with THCA. Concentrates are strong, so start tiny and find your level.
