What are terpenes?
Terpenes are why Blue Zushi smells nothing like Sherblato. They’re the aroma and flavour of every strain, and the reason you have a favourite. Here’s the short version.
Nature’s perfume
Terpenes are the fragrant oils in citrus peel, pine needles, lavender and cannabis. Same molecules, different plants.
The signature of a strain
Every strain carries its own terpene mix. That mix is what you smell when you open the jar and taste on the exhale.
Taste, not strength
Terpenes shape the experience you taste. The high comes from the cannabinoids, so check the THC percentage for strength.
What terpenes are
Terpenes are aromatic oils that plants produce. They give fruit, herbs and flowers their character. Cannabis makes dozens of them, and every strain has its own combination. That’s why one strain smells like lemon and the next like pine, pepper or ripe mango.
The ones you’ll taste most
Myrcene
Earthy, musky, ripe fruit. Also in mango and hops.
Limonene
Lemon and lime. Also in citrus peel.
Pinene
Pine and rosemary. Also in conifers.
Linalool
Floral and sweet. Also in lavender.
Beta-caryophyllene
Peppery and spicy. Also in black pepper and cloves.
Humulene
Woody and earthy. Also in hops.
Terpenes, strains and the high
You’ll hear that terpenes steer the high, the so-called entourage effect. It’s a nice idea that hasn’t been proven, so we keep it simple: terpenes are flavour and aroma, cannabinoids are the high.
Even the classic sativa and indica labels turn out to say more about a strain’s terpenes than about its family tree. In other words: pick by nose and taste, and look at the cannabinoids for strength.
Rule of thumb
Terpenes for flavour, cannabinoids for the high.
